2013 Menil Community Arts & Houston Indie Book Festival to take place Saturday April 20!
The Menil Collection and a group of surrounding non-profit arts organizations come together to host a free afternoon of art and entertainment that will extend across the Menil “campus.” Highlighting the diversity of the Menil neighborhood arts community the festival will include live music, film, readings, workshops, yoga, and children’s activities. The participating organizations for the 2013 Menil Community Arts & Houston Indie Book Festival include
All day events, include:
- The Menil Bookstore and Information Booth - Start your day here to pick up a map and schedule, as well as a refreshment courtesy of Texas Tea (1520 Sul Ross).
- Houston Center for Photography Collaborations X Print Sale (1441 W. Alabama St.)
- Houston Indie Book Festival will feature a variety of nationally distributed literary journals and small-press books alongside local booksellers, book and magazine publishers, small presses, literary organizations, and writers. (East end of The Menil Collection)
- The Menil Collection will feature exhibitions Forrest Bess: Seeing Things Invisible and Untitled (Structures): Leslie Hewitt in Collaboration with Bradford Young as well as their ongoing exhibits. (1515 Sul Ross St.)
- Dan Flavin Installation at Richmond Hall (1500 Richmond Ave.)
Several events and activities will take place throughout the day, including:
11:00AM – Hatha Yoga by Mary Opperman of Bayou Bliss Yoga on the Rothko Chapel Lawn, presented by The Rothko Chapel
11:15AM – Music from the Thomas Hulten Hot Viking Dixieland Band, presented by Da Camera
12:00PM – Young Writers Reading presented by Writers in the Schools
12:15PM - “The Territory” screening in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, presented by SWAMP (45 minute film)
1:00PM – Kids Yoga by Laura Calcaterra of Big Yoga Houston, on the Rothko Chapel Lawn, presented by The Rothko Chapel
1:00PM - Indie Editors Take the Mic featuring Austin Tremblay, Sophie Klahr, and Adam Peterson, presented by Inprint and Gulf Coast Journal
2:00PM – Mat Johnson, presented by Inprint
2:30PM – Acro Yoga Jam and Partner-based Acrobatic Yoga with Jeff Newton on the Rothko Chapel Lawn, presented by the Rothko Chapel
3:00PM – Derrick Brown and Jason Bayani, presented by Write Bloody Books
3:15PM - “The Territory” screening in the Byzantine Fresco Chapel, presented by SWAMP (45 minute film)
4:00PM – BooTown Theater Performance, presented by Inprint and Gulf Coast
4:30PM - Music from Line Upon Line, performing Hugues Dufourt’s percussion sextet Erewhon, presented by The Menil Collection
